We designed, built and fitted these Black American Walnut, alcove floating shelves and storage units into two spaces at either side of a log burner for a living room in a house in Harrogate. The alcove floating shelves were requested by the client after decorating their house and they needed some nice looking furniture to add the finishing touches to the room. They wanted the units to display books, DVDs and wood for the log burner, whilst having compartments to store unwanted odds and ends.
We measured the space and gave the various options of wood and finish and when the client was happy we made them all by hand. We used a water based lacquer for protection and then fitted, fully supported on three sides, into the clients home. Black American Walnut is one of the highest quality and more expensive woods you can use but by adding it as a veneer to the alcove floating shelves meant that the costs were kept to a reasonable, bespoke amount.
The alcove floating shelves also came with two storage cabinets, one containing three drawers with handleless, push to open, doors. Then a similar, push to open, cabinet door on the other side of the fireplace which was able to store away wires and other less attractive clutter. This side of the fire now has space for the TV and other media equipment.
All in all the project was a great success and you can see that this lovely Harrogate home made a great showcase for the alcove floating shelves and the work we do at Tom Maxwell – the home of bespoke joinery and handmade furniture in Leeds.
We have a few alcove floating shelves in our gallery so please have a look around to see the textured wood finishes to modern sprayed white finish. We cater to modern and traditional interior designs so have a look out to see the styles you might get for your home and we look forward to our next alcove floating shelves project with you.
