A sumptuous top-floor dressing room
Whether it’s the luxury of looking out onto the world without the world looking back, or the interesting angles and pools of light, there’s something undeniably alluring about top floors – something our clients, Alexa and George, couldn’t resist.
They’d already transformed the loft in their new home into an en-suite bedroom when they contacted us. Now, they needed a dressing room to complete their second-floor sanctuary, and having commissioned several pieces of bespoke furniture for their previous house, they knew we’d be able to help.
As is so often the case, the brief itself was pretty simple: a walk-in wardrobe with an island. But there were various technical issues to get around, along with a few specific requests:
Open Storage

being in the attic, one side had to fit under the eaves

both the lighting and the chimney breast had to be hidden
A wardrobe to behold
With the couple preferring ‘open’ cupboards, we had to make sure everything was designed to be seen – presenting us with the perfect opportunity to use an innovative new material developed by British material manufacturer, Xylocleaf. George and Alexa chose a laminate finish called Penelope from the company’s collection, resulting in a pleasing, linen-like surface texture.
Quartz precision
A quartz slab was chosen for the top of the island, but with compartmentalised drawers designed to hold and display some of Alexa and George’s most prized accessories, it needed ‘windows’. Knowing the high standard of their work (having partnered with them on several projects), we asked York-based Stone Connection to take care of the shaping.
Leveling Up
The clients’ vision for the dressing room included two parallel wardrobes. But the walls they were to be attached to weren’t the same; one of them had a chimney breast in the middle. We managed to conceal it with a mirrored panel – which had the added effect of bringing more natural light into the room by reflecting the Skylight on the other side.
Trick of the light
With Alexa and George creating a veritable sanctuary in their attic, we needed to ensure that it felt comfortable both day and night. A new type of lighting that incorporates Bluetooth® Mesh and allows the user to dim each individual light in the network and save their combinations as ‘moods’ was the perfect solution.
