This bookcase library was made for a university professor with a passion for books. The original enquiry was for an oak library with a bespoke ladder, lighting and cabinets. It was however essential that the project be realised within the constraints of a budget. On this occasion the initial specifications were changed and we ended up using tulipwood and beech veneer with a spray paint finish. Using water based paints we were able to maintain the grain pat-tern both in the tulipwood and beech veneer. Instead of using LED lighting throughout the bookcases, 4 individual lights were located on the framework and operated by the main light switch for the room. A cost affective alternative to a bespoke ladder was to find an ‘off the shelf’ product that would suit our requirements. Combining the ladder from Alton Ladders and adapting steel conduit for the rail we were able to reduce costs whilst still providing a functional and quality solution.
